Datasheet lists IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. What do they actually prove, and does it mean the panel lasts 25 years?

The short answer
IEC 61215 is design qualification (performance and durability tests), IEC 61730 is safety; neither predicts lifetime.

Plain explanation

IEC 61215-1 sets requirements for the design qualification of terrestrial PV modules for long-term operation outdoors, and the IEC says plainly that the test results are not a prediction of module lifetime. IEC 61730-1 covers construction requirements for safe electrical and mechanical operation, to prevent electric shock, fire and injury. So the two certificates show the design passed type tests; real life still depends on the build quality, the environment and how the module is installed. Check which editions are on the certificate and what your national code or grid operator requires.

Steps from the source

  1. Look for both IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 on the certificate, with edition years
  2. Check the certificate is issued for that exact model range
  3. Check what your national code / grid operator requires
"Test results are not construed as a quantitative prediction of module lifetime."
